Taking Notes

Grades 3-12
Once students have explicit instruction and deliberate practice with the three prerequisite note-taking strategies—underlining key words and phrases in a sentence, converting sentences into notes, and converting notes into sentences—they can practice annotating a text independently. Note-taking, a lifelong skill, helps students identify essential information, deepen comprehension, and retain what they've learned. It also promotes analytical thinking and supports students as they plan paragraphs (SPO) and essays (PTO, TO, MPO) before drafting. Remember to display the TWR Symbols Poster and explicitly teach each TWR symbol to support student understanding.
