Self-Paced Training: Your FAQs Answered

Share

As the Science of Reading reshapes literacy education, effective writing instruction has never been more essential. Yet few educators receive structured training in how to teach writing explicitly and systematically.

That is why The Writing Revolution (TWR) created an option for self-paced professional learning—a flexible path to mastering the Hochman Method®, an evidence-based approach to teaching writing that improves reading comprehension, critical thinking, and overall communication skills.

Whether you are a classroom teacher, instructional coach, or district leader, this program delivers high-quality professional development in writing instruction—on your schedule.

Who Should Choose Self-Paced Professional Development?

The self-paced format is ideal for educators who cannot attend live virtual sessions due to time zones or scheduling conflicts. It is also perfect for independent learners who want to move through the professional development course at their own pace.

This training benefits:

  • Classroom teachers (grades 3–12)
  • Instructional coaches and literacy leaders
  • School and district administrators implementing writing initiatives

Educators outside the continental United States especially appreciate this flexible access to TWR’s high-impact writing professional learning.

How Does Self-Paced Training Work?

You can log into MyTWR Hub anytime, from any internet-enabled device. The course is structured using forced progression, meaning each lesson builds on the last for a cohesive learning experience.

Each segment includes short Checks for Understanding to reinforce learning before moving on. Educators can review previously completed modules anytime.

  • Estimated time: 10–12 hours
  • Access period: 12 months from date of purchase
  • Certificate of Completion: Included for professional learning credit, depending on local rules and regulations

What Writing Instruction Courses Are Available?

Currently, TWR’s self-paced professional learning is available for The Hochman Method: 3–12, with modules released throughout the 2025–2026 school year:

  • Module 3: Revision & Summaries — Available starting December 11, 2025

How Is the Self-Paced Training Organized? (Courses, Modules, and Segments Explained)

TWR’s professional learning courses are carefully structured to guide educators through the Hochman Method® step by step. Understanding how the course is organized helps participants plan their learning and implementation effectively.

Here is how the structure works:

  • Courses are the complete professional learning programs, such as The Hochman Method: 3–12. Each course focuses on developing a deep understanding of writing instruction strategies that can be applied across subjects and grade levels.
  • Modules are the major building blocks of each course. For The Hochman Method: 3–12, there are four modules—Sentences, Note-Taking and Paragraphs, Revision and Summaries, and Compositions. Each module focuses on a key area of writing instruction and builds logically on the one before it.
  • Segments are shorter learning units within each module, usually taking about 20 minutes or less to complete. Each segment includes clear objectives, examples, and a short “Check for Understanding” to help you apply what you learn right away.

The course uses a system called forced progression to ensure strong understanding. You must complete each segment and pass its Check for Understanding before the next one unlocks. Previously completed content remains open for review anytime.

This structure allows educators to experience a clear, scaffolded professional learning sequence—mirroring the same structured, cumulative approach used to teach writing to students through the Hochman Method®.

How Long Does the Self-Paced Professional Learning Take to Complete?

The Self-Paced Training for The Hochman Method: 3–12 is designed to fit into educators’ busy schedules while providing meaningful, high-impact professional learning.

On average, the full course takes 10–12 hours to complete. Because the program is self-paced, you can move through it at whatever speed works best for your schedule—whether that means dedicating a few hours each week or completing it in concentrated sessions.

Each segment within a module is intentionally short—typically 20 minutes or less—so educators can engage with the material during planning periods, professional learning community (PLC) meetings, or other small blocks of time.

Your progress is saved automatically in MyTWR Hub, allowing you to stop and start as needed. Many educators appreciate the flexibility to pause after a segment, reflect on the strategy, and immediately apply it in their classrooms before continuing.

This design ensures the training fits within the rhythm of a busy school year while still meeting requirements for professional development hours in some states and earning a Certificate of Completion.

How Does Self-Paced Training Compare to Live Virtual Professional Development?

Both formats teach the same evidence-based writing strategies, but the delivery differs:

  • Live Virtual Training: Real-time interactive professional development via Zoom, featuring Q&A, feedback, and collaboration with TWR faculty.
  • Self-Paced Training: Independent, flexible professional learning available anytime, anywhere.

TWR recommends live sessions for educators who thrive on interaction but designed the self-paced format to ensure access to writing PD for all educators.

How Does Self-Paced Training Differ from Refresher Training?

Both focus on The Hochman Method: 3–12, but they serve different professional development needs. In short:

  • New to TWR? Choose Self-Paced training.
  • Already trained? Refresher training is right for you.

What Is MyTWR Hub?

MyTWR Hub is TWR’s centralized online learning platform for all memberships. It provides secure access to training modules, MyTWR Tools, and your personalized dashboard for progress tracking and resources.

Each educator receives an individual login to ensure data integrity and accurate professional learning records.

How Much Does the Self-Paced Membership Cost?

Membership begins on the date of purchase and includes continuous access to professional learning resources.

Do Educators Receive a Book with Self-Paced Training?

Yes. Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation email with a redemption link for your copy of The Writing Revolution 2.0—an essential resource for this professional learning experience.

Is Self-Paced Professional Learning Available for Grades K–2?

Not yet. While the Hochman Method® applies across all grades, TWR’s self-paced writing PD currently focuses on grades 3–12.

Because K–2 training emphasizes oral language development and early literacy, TWR recommends enrolling early-grade teachers in live virtual professional development designed specifically for their needs.
