Please note that the remote course is intended for those who are unable to attend the in-person course due to distance. TWR asks educators from the New York City metropolitan area to attend the in-person courses.

This course introduces participants to the Hochman Method, an explicit set of sequenced strategies for teaching expository writing that can be integrated into any content. Specific strategies are presented to improve the structure, coherence and clarity of students’ writing, beginning at the sentence-level. The focus moves to outlines, paragraphs, and compositions. Participants will also learn how to teach notetaking, summarization, and revision. There are opportunities to practice and create activities as well as receive feedback from TWR faculty. This course is open to all educators in grades 3-12 but is especially suited to teachers (including Special Education and ENL) of English and social studies.
This course will be held over 11 sessions. Sessions 1 to 11 will be from 10:30 am - 11:30 am ET.

This workshop is intended for principals and other key administrators involved in the school-wide implementation of TWR. This workshop will deepen school leaders’ understanding of the core values of TWR and the key components of a successful school-wide implementation of the Hochman Method. These components include how to give teachers feedback on their TWR instruction and achieve consistency of implementation across grade levels and content areas.
This workshop will be held over 4 sessions. Each session will be 3 pm - 4:30 pm ET

Prerequisite: Advancing Thinking Through Writing I
This workshop is intended for secondary educators (grades 6-12). In this workshop, teachers learn research-based practices for effectively incorporating the TWR strategies learned in the ATTWI course in their classroom instruction. There is a special focus on purposeful planning, using assessment to inform instructional decisions, and creating an engaging and motivating writing environment. This course is open to all educators in grades 6-12 that have attended an ATTWI course, but is especially suited to teachers (including Special Education and ENL) of English and social studies.
This workshop will be held over 4 sessions. Each session will be 10 am - 11:30 am ET.

This workshop is intended for elementary educators (grades 1-5). In this workshop, teachers learn research-based practices for effectively incorporating the TWR strategies learned in the ATTWI course in their classroom instruction. This course introduces Kindergarten through 2nd grade educators to the Hochman Method, an explicit set of sequenced strategies for teaching expository writing that can be integrated into any content. Educators will learn specific TWR strategies that build the vocabulary and language skills necessary for future success in writing. TWR faculty will present ageappropriate examples and techniques for scaffolding and differentiation. There will be opportunities to practice and create activities as well as receive feedback from TWR faculty. This course is intended exclusively for K-2 educators to be taken in lieu of Advancing Thinking Through Writing I.
This course will be held over 5 sessions. Session 1 to 4 will be from 10:30 am - 12 pm ET. Session 5 will be from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.

This course is intended exclusively for science educators to be taken in lieu of Advancing Thinking Through Writing I.

As such, NYS teachers who successfully complete TWR courses may earn clock hours toward their CTLE requirement. Because activities in TWR courses include scaffolded strategies designed for all students, including ELLs/MLLs, in mastering core content, these hours may also be used toward the minimum requirement in language acquisition addressing the needs of English Language Learners.
