A Soviet blockade cut off West Berlin, leaving more than two million people without food, fuel, or essential supplies. In response, the United States and its allies launched the Berlin Airlift, delivering goods by plane for nearly a year. This effort sustained the city and reshaped how the United States was viewed around the world.
