Chapter 2

Sentences: Learning the Fundamentals

This chapter discusses how sentences are the building blocks of all good writing. TWR’s sentence-level strategies equip students with the foundational skills needed to write paragraphs and essays. By correcting fragments, scrambled sentences, and run-ons, students can grasp the concept of a complete sentence. When these strategies are embedded in the content students are learning, they not only refine sentence-level skills but also enhance comprehension and understanding of the material.

Discussion Questions
  1. Why should students practice expanding sentences?
  2. What are important things to remember when creating sentence expansion activities?
  3. What are ways sentence expansion activities can be scaffolded and differentiated for students?
  4. Create a sentence expansion activity based on content you will be teaching.
  5. Why should students learn how to take notes?
  6. What are the steps to introducing students to note-taking?
  7. What can you do to ensure students become effective note-takers?
